Apple Inc. is reportedly preparing to unveil a new wall-mounted tablet designed to control smart home appliances, facilitate video calls, and utilize artificial intelligence for app navigation. This innovative device, code named J490, may be announced as early as March, according to sources familiar with the project.

As the tech giant seeks to strengthen its foothold in the competitive smart home market, the upcoming product will highlight Apple’s new AI platform, Apple Intelligence. The device is expected to be priced around $1,000 for a higher-end version, while a simpler display model will be offered at a lower cost, making it more accessible than existing competitors like Amazon’s Echo Show and Google’s Nest Hub.

The tablet features a 6-inch screen, resembling a squared iPad and about the size of two iPhones side by side. It will come in silver and black, equipped with a front-facing camera, built-in speakers, and a rechargeable battery. Users will primarily interact with the device through voice commands via Siri and Apple Intelligence, although it will also have a touch interface inspired by Apple’s WatchOS and iPhone’s StandBy mode.

Designed as a central hub for the home, the wall tablet aims to streamline tasks such as controlling appliances, accessing notes and calendars, and displaying photos. It will integrate seamlessly with Apple’s existing HomeKit framework, allowing users to manage a variety of smart home devices, from lights to security cameras.

In a bid to enhance its utility, Apple has also planned various mounting options and accessory bases for the device, enabling it to fit into different rooms and use cases. Moreover, it will serve as an intercom system and can display security alerts and footage from connected cameras.

While the current version will not include an app store, Apple has plans to expand its features over time. The device is the result of collaborative efforts across multiple teams at Apple, emphasizing the company’s commitment to innovation in the smart home space.

With the anticipated launch, Apple aims to establish a strong presence in a sector dominated by competitors like Amazon and Google, offering consumers a new way to interact with their homes through advanced technology.
